For decades now, artists struggling in the United States have banded together and forged anarchic institutions, experimental galleries, unorthodox distribution models, and alternative economies. How can younger artists improve upon these imperfect—and sometimes chaotic—prototypes to build new, responsive models for collective artistic action?

Sean J Patrick Carney is an artist and writer in Austin, TX. He is a frequent contributor to Art in America and has participated in numerous artist collective models including the Bruce High Quality Foundation (studio collective), BHQFU (free art school), Essex Flowers (artist-run gallery), GWC Investigators (paranormal research team), and more.
