This filmic portrait of Guy de Cointet, the French-born, California-based artist, compiles interviews with friends and colleagues such as John Baldessari, Larry Bell, Richard Jackson, Paul McCarthy, Violetta Sanchez, and Alexis Smith. The portrait of the artist becomes the portrait of a scene—of L.A.’s conceptual art and performance scene at the junction of the 1970s and '80s. Following the screening, there will be a Q&A with the film’s director and curator, Marie de Brugerolle. Run time: 82 min.

About the Artist

Guy de Cointet (1934-1983) was a French-born artist based in Los Angeles who created text and sculptural works, often combining them as props and stage sets in theatrical performance pieces. He is now recognized as one of the major figures of conceptual art in Los Angeles, influencing artists such as Paul McCarthy and Mike Kelley.

About the Director

Marie de Brugerolle is art historian, curator, artist, and dramatist. She is professor at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, France. Her work centers on the status of performance art from its beginnings in happenings and events to today.
