Antiquities Action presents Austin: the Friendly City (1943), a documentary originally made in 1943 by the Austin Chamber of Commerce depicting the vision of the city promoted by prominent businessmen and officials in the era of segregation, and Clarksville (1970), a documentary short chronicling the destruction of the Clarksville freedmen community as the City of Austin planned the expansion of the MoPac Expressway, otherwise known as Texas State Highway Loop 1. Within Clarksville, native Clarksville residents, including Seymour Washington, “The Walking Blacksmith,” discuss the history of their 99-year old community, the struggle to preserve their culture and the forced migration of most of its original residents.
