Shadi Harouni will consider the metaphysics of hope alive in contested bodies, forbidden objects and forgotten histories. Her lecture looks at architecture, mountain and monument, both erected and imagined, as sites of resistance, remembrance and disavowal. She will discuss the development of her practice and recent completed, ongoing and failed projects.
Shadi Harouni (b. Hamedan, Iran) is an artist based in New York and Tehran. Harouni's practice ranges from architectural interventions and sculptures, to printmaking, photography and film. Her research is centered on disavowed histories of dissent and resistance, chiefly in her native Iran and Kurdistan. Harouni’s projects have been exhibited at Queens Museum (NY), Kunstmuseum Bonn (DE), Prague City Museum (CZ), Doris McCarthy Gallery, University of Toronto (CA), Ratti Foundation (IT), Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts (NY), Hangar Barcelona (SP), Museo Novecento (Florence, IT). Her work has been featured in Artforum, New York Times, The Guardian, among other publications. She has been awarded the Gattuso Prize, Harpo Foundation Award, residencies at Civitella Ranieri (IT), Skowhegan (ME), SOMA (MX), Artists Research Lab, Como (IT). She holds an MFA from New York University and a BA from University of Southern California. In 2019, Harouni served as Acting Director of Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine. She is Assistant Professor and Head of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Art at New York University.
