Currently an artist-in-residence at Sculpture Space in New York, Alumna Gracelee Lawrence (MFA in Studio Art, 2016), in addition to her collaborator Devra Freelander, will exhibit site-specific outdoor sculpture as part of Times Square Immersive, a partnership between Times Square Arts and SPRING/BREAK during the latter's eighth art show iteration. Freelander and Lawrence have been selected in addition to three other projects from Noah Scalin, ICY and SOT, and Michael Zelehoski.
Freelander and Lawrence's project, Eventual Artifact, will imagine "a fantasy core sample of Times Square from the future, [where] fluorescent faux-geological strata are peppered with 3D printed copper forms of imported fruits, hands, CDs, sneakers, Styrofoam cups, and other techno-capitalist artifacts."
Freelander and Lawrence will also be curating and exhibiting new work in the SPRING/BREAK exhibition itself, which typically takes place during Armory Arts Week as a way of challenging the traditional cultural landscape of the art market. This year's SPRING/BREAK theme, according to co-founders Andrew Gori and Ambre Kelly, is "Fact and Fiction."
“This theme grew out of the 24-hour news cycle, the political minutiae of being an American, and fearing the ideologies that were being thrown at us by our current government,” said Gori to artnet News.
SPRING/BREAK Art Show in NYC will take place between March 5 - 11, 2019, and Eventual Artifact will be on view at Broadway Plaza from March 5 - 31, 2019.
