At the heart of what art educators do is to create new ideas and implement visions with each other. Many in the art education department present at conferences around the country to share and further their research in group settings with other educators. We are proud to share the faculty, student, and alumni presentations happening this fall:

Donalyn Heise is co-presenting research at the 2023 Texas Art Education Association Fall Professional Development Conference in Allen, Texas on The Art for Wellbeing with Olivia Spiers (UT AED alumni and Gallery Coordinator, Outreach & Programming at The Art Galleries at Austin Community College), and current MA Candidates Rouqayya Majeed and Alyssa LaLeux. They represent multiple perspectives of art education from university, museum, late and early career, and preservice. They will share effective arts-based strategies for engaging in purposeful resilience building, empathy, visual thinking, enhanced perception, mindfulness, self-compassion, and creative problem solving.

Christina Bain, and Art Ed graduate students Leslie Tang, Rouqayya Majeed, Hope Harlow, and Sadie Barlow are presenting “Embracing Curiosity: Exciting New Research Directions” at the Texas Art Education Association conference in Allen, Texas.

Christina Bain, Donalyn Heise, and Dawn Stienecker are presenting “Artful Journeying” at the Texas Art Education Association conference in Allen, Texas on November 17, 2023.

Donalyn Heise delivered the Fall Convocation Keynote speech for Austin Community College Arts and Digital Media Division in August 2023. Her talk entitled, “Teaching the Arts in a Post Pandemic: Now What!?!” was based on her extensive research on fostering resilience through art in K12 schools, higher ed, and community settings.

Christina Bain will be presenting “Renfro-sensei: Nancy Renfro and the 1988 I Love You International Puppetry Festival” at the 2023 Mapping International Art Education History Conference to be held at Teachers College, Columbia University in New York City.

Neal Flynn, MA candidate in Art Education, will be presenting “What happened to ‘Art-For-Peace’?” at the 2023 Mapping International Art Education Histories conference to be held at Teachers College, Columbia University in New York City from November 30–December 2, 2023.

Donalyn Heise and Christina Bain have been awarded a grant from Planet Texas 2050 in partnership with the Humanities Insitute for The Art of Survival. The central research question this project addresses is: How do visual arts practices and approaches enhance understanding and awareness of climate change?
