Austin-based gallery Big Medium will present One for Us, an exhibition featuring the work of a multitude of women of color from all parts of Texas curated by Jaelynn Walls, BA candidate in Art History and Plan II Honors undergraduate student.

Through the work of twenty artists, the show examines the current landscape of women of color attempting to better understand their own identities within the radically troubling social milieu of the 21st century. Whether it is finding power within that marginalization or examining the origins of their otherness, the artists are able to explore this idea of identity in nuanced and complex ways. Into these works, the artists incorporate their lived experiences as women of color in the South while simultaneously bringing into question ideas of identification as it relates to intersections of race, religion, nationality and sexuality.

Walls is the creator and host of Art in Color, an educational web series exploring the identities and works of contemporary artists of color. Her curatorial practice revolves around varying notions of identity-based diaspora and border crossing in contemporary American art.

The exhibition will be on view from February 22 - 25, 2019 and an opening reception will be held on Friday, February 22 from 7-10 PM.
