Commissioned by the U.S. Department of State's Art in Embassies program, The University of Texas at Austin Studio Art Professor Margo Sawyer has completed her monumental public art project, Synchronicity Spiral for Kosovo, for the U.S. Embassy in Pristina, Kosovo. Sawyer worked with renowned German glass studio Franz Mayer of Munich, who were behind the glass pieces of Ellsworth Kelly’s Austin at the Blanton Museum of Art, to create a site-specific, large-scale sculpture of hand-painted glass.
When speaking with Arts and Culture Texas in her studio prior to the completion of the project, Sawyer remarked of the piece, "you can’t not think about Richard Serra with a semi-enclosed circular form, but it’s a space full of color, an inviting, non-threatening, joyous gesture."
Synchronicity Spiral for Kosovo joins other public commissions by Sawyer where color and light are in dialogue with architecture to create transformative spaces that invite contemplation.
